Michigan-Ontario District Results
July 29-30, 2006 - Gull Lake Yacht Club
by Michael Ehnis
Photos by Ela Sliwerska and Aimee Lechota

The Flying Scots hit the road often this season. The first stop on the tour was the districts at Gull Lake. Brian & Suzy Hawkins, Jim & Marie Davis, Fritz Wagner & Greg Schymik (Greg back from the desert on his vacation) and Michael Ehnis & Ela Sliwerska took to the water in very hot and steamy conditions. Saturday’s weather brought a gentle 7-9 mph breeze and a few “holes”. All were more than “well done” at the end of race #3 with Temperatures in the 90’s.

That night found Fritz, Greg, Michael & Ela yucking it up with the Crystal group at the local eatery. Since most of us were staying at the MSU dorms on the lake (which lacked AC) none were rushing to leave the restaurant. We even found an excuse to hit the local ice cream shop to prolong the inevitable long, hot night in our rooms. ( I think we all lost a few pounds by the morning which should have resulted in better boat speed the next day).

Sunday brought two quick races, which were held in light air conditions before a very strong front blew through. Thankfully with the help of the Gull Lake organizing committee all were able to get their boats out just before the conditions became treacherous. Unfortunately PYC skippers didn’t have one of their better weekends as Brain and Suzy Hawkins were the highest placing finishers from the fleet with a seventh. PYC did, however, have success in helping Paul Lee win the event as Andrew Davis lent a hand crewing on day two of the regatta.
