Most cloudy skies, but yet warm temperatures greeted 17 sailors looking to get in “one more” before putting their boats to bed for the winter. This last chance regatta drew sailors from 6 different clubs within the district. Each skipper and crew had the opportunity to practice their “right to vote” prior to the start of the event. Assistant fleet captain Andy Ingall (filling in for an absent Todd Moore attending an early morning funeral to which he was overheard saying the night before “no one dies at a convenient moment”) and his appointed helper Brian Hawkins found 16 boats willing to move one of the two scheduled races from Sunday to Saturday to avoid a possible deluge and excess wind on Sunday (note: the author was the one hold out on this – he doesn’t believe anyone can really predict Michigan weather 24 hours in advance which to his credit he was right on the money). After an excellent skippers briefing by Bill O’Donnel and a late lunch by the PYC kitchen the competitors were off.

Saturday’s racing went off without a hitch, as PRO Craig Kivi (fleets 20’s self appointed race manager) and assistant Doug Christensen (former Michigan-Ontario Governor) got all four races off with each being about 45 minutes. More importantly the windward/leeward courses had very good mark placement. Several tacks and gybes were needed to reach each pin (translation: this was hardly a parade – they were a pain in the you know what to get to). Also the short intermission between races 2 and 3 were just that: short (it appears Scot sailors may have larger bladder capacity relative to other class boats).

One of Saturdays highlights was Race # 1 which provided some fun post race discussion. What a surprise seeing fleet captain Todd Moore and his lovely Bride Suzanne first to the windward mark. It appears that the spirit of his late aunt may have provided an extra lift or two to the pin.

The best performance of the weekend by any sailor came in this race #2 by none other than Kent Davis ( #5488 Crystal Sail Club) and his crew Suzanna Tellschow (Lake Lansing Sail Club – Laser/Lightning sailor). At the start, Kent was over early and pinned by #4691 Andrew Ingall from underneath. By the time he returned, he without question the last boat to start. A tough set of circumstances for someone that just collected a first in race #1. This series of events only seemed to strengthen Kent’s resolve. To the surprise of Bill Pfund #5393 who couldn’t believe his eyes, Kent found his way ahead of all but two boats (and he was pushing them for the win) to place 3rd. He was able to follow up this performance with two bullets to close out the day. It appeared to the author, his not showing up at 7:00 AM as he had done the previous year provided the right amount of sleep to sail well.

After the races Saturday, the group met in the park for some terrific snacks including Suzanne Moore’s to-die-for corn chip dip. A small group of sailors, including Paul Lee (2004 district champ) were trying to figure out how Kent was going so fast. A good time was spent rehashing the day’s races.

Sunday found a delayed start due to mirror like conditions (as Jack White said the day before “it’s going to get ugly” however it was so, for the opposite conditions so many expected). When things did get going Brian and Suzy Hawkins (#3288 Portage YC) held off Kent for the final win of the event.

Post race activities included lots of pizza and liquid refreshments. Congratulations to Kent Davis for winning this years event in the Championship Division and to Andrew Ingall in the Challenger Division.
