Michigan Hot Scot Results
This season’s event was held at its latest date ever and thankfully Mother Nature didn’t disappoint as the skies were clear and the temperatures in the mid-70’s making it feel like the mid-summer. This year saw 12 competitors taking part in the Championship Division while 4 skippers participated in the Challenger. The participants who had the longest trek were Art & Annette Withington from Piseco Yacht Club fleet #142. They happened to be vacationing on the lake for the month of September and used the famed “Pickle” hull from PYC. The biggest obstacle for pulling off good races was the committee boat, which decided to start the off-season a week early. With the engine not running, PRO Bill O’Donnel and his helpers were limited to placing the start line closer to the windward mark on leg 1 of all races, so that the 5 planned races could be sailed by having everyone finish in the middle of the lake. His efforts paid off with very competitive races even though the first legs, at times, seemed more like a knife fight in a phone booth than a friendly sailing competition. Saturdays highlights included a very wacky race two which, in typical Portage Lake fashion, had it all including 90 degree windshifts, puffs up to 12 and the wind dropping all the way to 0. Fortunately, the sailors were spared motor boat traffic with the annoying "tubers" that typically turn up the frustration level in such sparadic condtions. The competitiors learned just how tricky this race would be as just prior to the start the wind shifted all the way to the pin end making for an incredibly favored port/pin end. With everyone trying to adjust and take advantage of the shift, the fleet found themselves in a general recall. On the restart, Ela Sliwerska #4336 and Ed Bayer #2 found a little opening, duking it out for all seven legs of the race. On the final windward leg both gambled and went right where they found an evaproating breeze leaving themselves in a hole about 20 yards from the finish (and praying for wind). This set the stage for Forest Rogers #5235 who went left to sneak by at the line to take the win followed by Sliwerska #4336, then Bill Pfund #5193 stealing third followed by Bayer #2 in fourth. After a tiring race #2, the group sailed in to freshen up. With the wind fading, a vote was taken in the park as to whether to venture out for a third race. By a 9-7 vote the competitors decided on becoming the "Flying Socials" instead as they tapped the keg and worked on a variety of snacks and hors d’ oeuvres’ to better prepare themselves for the challenge of three races the following day. Sunday greeted the sailors with S-SE winds ranging from 5-15 with lots of shifts making for a variety of lead changes. Other than Rogers #5235 and Pfund #5193, the rest of the championship division seemed to be pretty evenly matched in positions 3-8. It truly showed the strength of the district and competitiveness of the event. Congratulations to this years championship winner Forest Rogers and
Brad Glance and Kirsten Petro and Johahn Dahm in the challenger division.
